Short-Term Independent Study

Hello Cougars!

For absences of fewer than 16 consecutive school days

Short-Term Independent Study allows students to complete assignments during a planned absence so their days may be counted as excused once all requirements are met.

Step 1: Request STIS

Families should notify the school 3–5 days before a planned absence when possible.

Requests can be made:

In cases of illness or emergency, a request may be submitted after the absence.

Step 2: Eligibility Review

The school will confirm that the student:

  • Is able to work independently
  • Does not have ongoing attendance or truancy concerns
  • Not all students may qualify.

Step 3: Agreement & Assignments

If approved:

  • The school will email teachers, parents/guardians, and the student.
  • Teachers will provide assignments through Canvas, email, or a packet.
  • A Short-Term Independent Study contract will be signed.
    • The agreement must be signed by:
      • Student
      • Parent/Guardian
      • All teachers
      • An administrator

Signatures must be collected before the absence begins unless there is an emergency or illness.

If all teachers do not agree to the STIS request, the contract cannot move forward.

Step 4: Complete the Work

Students must complete all assigned work during the independent study period and submit it upon returning to school (or within the assigned timeline).

Step 5: Attendance Credit

Teachers review completed work and submit verification.

  • If all work is completed satisfactorily, full attendance credit may be granted.
  • If only part of the work is completed, partial attendance credit may be awarded based on the percentage of work finished.
  • If no work is completed, attendance credit cannot be granted.
