Mr. Sparks' Absence Work - Logical Fallacies in Google Classroom

Mr. Sparks' Absence Work - Logical Fallacies

Dear Students,
I am some kind of sick today, so I would appreciate your attention to the directions below. Listening to your conversations these past weeks has shown me that I can help each of you with your forms of argumentation. Translation: I can help you avoid weak reasoning. So, I have 1 classroom task, 1 reading assignment and 1 writing/research assignment that you can either do alone or with a partner.

First, your classroom task… Please use your phones to download the app “Pocket Points.” This app will be used to calculate extra credit in my class. I will explain further on Friday, but my goal is to have all of the class participate in order to have a popcorn and snack party on the Monday after Valentine’s Day.

Second, your reading assignment for today… Please get your textbook and read pages 102 through 112. Please ignore the tasks that it asks of you in the “Your Turn” sections. I have a different assessment for you.

Third and Finally, your writing/research assignment… You may work with a partner (one) or by yourself for this assignment. It will be due by the end of the period. Please submit your work via Google Doc (a shared one if working with a partner-labeled with each participant). Using the Logical Fallacies on pages 108-112, create a fictional dialogue between two people having an argument. There is not length to this project except that you must incorporate at least five different uses of Logical Fallacies for each character. You do not need to label them as we will be using these for an in-class exercise on Friday. Additionally, we will be doing a Kahoot on Friday that will include examples of Logical Fallacies. An example of this may look like…

Emilia: “Hey, Lupe. Did I tell you? I got a high score last night on League of Legends. I’m the best player in the whole school.” The logical fallacy used was a Broad Generalization.

Lupe: “Awe, that’s like when I defeated my uncle at chess and then my cousin and then my mom, last Thanksgiving.” The logical fallacy used was a False Analogy.

Each sentence does not have to be an example of a logical fallacy. Play around with them, look them up and their examples online and try to create a fun dialogue between these characters you create. Please submit your work here. Thank you.
