Freedom Writers Rhetorical Analysis

For your “final”, please choose ONE of the following options based on your home situation (see Learning Guide for links):

Watch Freedom Writers, which is available on Netflix or Amazon Prime.
Watch this PBS documentary titled “Freedom Writers: Stories from the Heart”.
Read this article and explore the Freedom Writers Foundation Website. You can also watch Gruwell’s TED Talk.

You will take your knowledge of Freedom Writers and complete the 2-part Freedom Writers Movie Activity.

Part 1
Do a Google Image search for Freedom Writers. Which one is most effective in promoting the film? Paste the most effective image in the Google Classroom assignment and then write a CER paragraph analysis in which you take a position, and support it with at least 2 specific examples and reasoning.

Part 2
Imagine that you are involved in the marketing of the film to a US audience; part of your job is to develop a poster campaign.

In a well-written CER paragraph, describe the specific choices you would make in order to persuade the audience to see this film. Who is the audience? How would you appeal to the audience’s emotion, for example? Which images or events from the film would you include? What would your tagline be? Overall, which persuasive techniques do you think would be the most effective? Why?

Free Choice RA Essay

Select 1 released Rhetorical Analysis AP Prompts (Question 2), and write a full essay (at least a Thesis and 2 full body paragraphs) in 45 minutes.

You may pick any passage/ prompt that seems interesting to you and that we haven’t already done in class.
You can also take the Progress Check in Unit 4 or Unit 7 in MyAP.

As you look at your 2003 Green essay, identify your strengths and weaknesses. Make a list to share on the RA Strengths and Weaknesses discussion board. Include at least 1 strength and no more than 3 weaknesses.

Step 4 (30 minutes): Write your essay.
At a minimum, you will need to complete a thesis and 2 body paragraphs within this 30 minutes.

You can either type or hand write, but do whatever you actually plan to do on test day, so that you can practice.

You can also practice it in MyAP; it’s titled Week 4 RA Practice. You can split your screen with the MyAP test and your Doc. It’ll give you a sense of what the exam might look like on the screen and start to simulate the testing experience.

Turn in your full essay in Google Classroom; the assignment is titled 2003 Green Essay.
If you hand wrote it, take a photo of your essay and paste it in or upload it.

I will be checking for completion only since it is a practice. If you have specific questions about it, email me.

Through small group instruction, students will engage with other students and expert AP teachers in an interactive environment.

To keep up your skills while school is closed, I've unlocked all the Progress Checks on AP Classroom that we haven't already done.

To practice multiple choice, take Progress Check MCQ 5, 7, 8, 9. Go through the answers and see what you're missing and why.
To practice Rhetorical Analysis essay, take Progress Check FRQ 4, 7. Allow yourself 40 minutes.
To practice Argument essay, take Progress Check FRQ 5, 8. Allow yourself 40 minutes.
To practice Synthesis essay, take Progress Check FRQ 3, 6, 9. Allow yourself 55 minutes.

You can also revise and resubmit your Own Argument to work on your writing.

Another great thing to do is to READ and write in your Writer's Notebook.
I've posted The Things They Carried in PDF form and as audio for you to read.
Journal your experiences in your Writer's Notebook during the school closure (this will be so interesting for you to read again in another 10-20 years or so). Write about what you’re seeing in the news; how your friends and family are responding; what is happening in your town/community; what is closed in your neighborhood, city, state, country; what you are feeling; etc.

My Own Argument DUE April 1 (no joke!)

Students will select a topic from their "matters" list and develop a free write into a full argument piece. Students must develop their position using evidence and reasoning, but they may choose to use evidence from their own brain (argument style: text, self, world) or complete research (synthesis style: at least 3 sources) or a combination of both. Ultimately, the writer will explain why this topic MATTERS to them and why it should matter to others.
