The late Ed Goddard, a member of the E.H.S. Class of 1933, entered the school's Hall of Fame in 1970. He was an outstanding high school football and baseball player who earned statewide recognition in both sports during the early 1930s. He attended Washington State College, where he was twice selected as All-America running back (1935–1936). Ed also held a 12-year record for the longest punt at the Los Angeles Coliseum (72 yards). The record was set in the 1936 Washington State-U.S.C. game. He played in the East-West Shrine game in San Francisco and played professional football (Cleveland Rams) and baseball (Hollywood Stars of the old Pacific Coast League). The head football coach at Fullerton Junior College for several years, Ed eventually returned to Escondido to live out his productive and successful life.
